Brain-Grow offers cognitive neurotherapy for older adults who want to take their brain health seriously — and the science behind it may surprise you

There is a story most of us have been told about the ageing brain.

It goes something like this: after a certain age, the brain begins to decline. Memory fades. Sharpness dulls. The quick, flexible thinking of youth gives way to something slower, less reliable. And the best you can do is manage it gracefully.

It is a story told so often, and believed so widely, that most people never think to question it.

But it is not the whole truth. In fact, in some of the most important ways, it is simply wrong.

What the science actually says

The contemporary neuroscience of ageing tells a very different story.

The brain retains the capacity to reorganise, adapt and grow — to form new neural connections, strengthen existing ones, and compensate for areas of difficulty — across the entire lifespan. This capacity is called neuroplasticity, and it does not stop at 60, 70 or 80.

What changes is not the brain’s capacity to grow. What changes is whether we give it what it needs to do so.

Sleep. Movement. Social connection. Cognitive challenge. Emotional processing. A regulated nervous system. These are not optional extras for older adults. They are the conditions under which the brain thrives — or struggles.

And here is what I have learned in over 30 years of clinical practice: most people over 60 have never been given a clear, evidence-based map of what their brain actually needs. They have been given vague advice about staying active and keeping the mind busy. But not a map.

That is why I built Brain-Grow.

What Brain-Grow Cognitive Neurotherapy Offers Older Adults

Brain-Grow is a 12-week cognitive neurotherapy for older adults 60 and above, built around the science of what the brain needs to grow, strengthen and protect itself in later life.

It is not a memory class. It is not gentle chair exercises. It is not a social group with a crossword puzzle.

It is a structured, evidence-based, individually tailored clinical program — designed for people who want to take their brain health seriously.

Each week, you work directly with me — 60 minutes, one-on-one, at our Belmont or Byford clinic, or via telehealth anywhere in Australia. Every session is built around your specific history, your concerns, your goals and your pace.

Over 12 weeks, the program moves through six domains:

  • Understanding your brain and body — what neuroplasticity actually means for you, and how your physical state shapes your cognitive function every single day
  • Calming your nervous system — because a dysregulated nervous system cannot learn, remember or connect, no matter how hard it tries
  • Deepening social connection — the research is unequivocal: loneliness accelerates cognitive decline. Safe, genuine relationships are among the most powerful protections the brain has
  • Processing grief and loss — unprocessed grief affects cognitive function, immune health and emotional regulation. For many older adults, this is the missing piece
  • Building cognitive fitness and movement — the specific activities, and the specific kinds of movement, that produce genuine brain growth rather than just passing the time
  • Creating a Brain Health Life Plan — a personalised plan that is yours to keep and build on long after the program ends

You leave with a completed workbook, a clear understanding of your own brain, and a set of habits and practices that are sustainable for the long term.

Who Brain-Grow is for

I am sometimes asked whether Brain-Grow is for people with memory problems, or for people who simply want to stay sharp.

The honest answer is: both.

Brain-Grow is designed to span the full range of older adult experience. That includes:

  • Adults who have noticed changes in their memory, concentration or mental sharpness and want to understand what is happening and what can be done
  • Adults navigating grief and bereavement — particularly the loss of a long partnership, where the impact on cognitive and emotional health is often profound and underestimated
  • Adults managing anxiety, low mood or the adjustment difficulties that come with retirement, a health diagnosis or a significant life change
  • Family carers carrying the weight of caring for someone they love, and feeling the toll of it
  • Adults who are well, clear-eyed, and simply want to give their brain the best possible conditions to keep growing

Cognitive neurotherapy for older adults starts where you are — not where someone thinks you should be.

A note to family members

If you are reading this on behalf of someone you love, I want to say something directly to you.

The decision to seek support for brain health is not an admission of decline. It is an act of intelligence and self-respect. And often, the most helpful thing a family member can do is not to manage or problem-solve — but to quietly place this information in front of the person they care about, and let them make the choice themselves.

Brain-Grow works best when the person comes because they want to. Most do.

The first step

If any of this resonates — whether for yourself or someone you love — the first step is simply a conversation.

You do not need a GP referral if you are paying privately. Medicare Better Access, Home Care Package, CHSP, NDIS and EAP funding are all available for those who are eligible.

Sessions are available in-clinic at Belmont and Byford, or via secure telehealth anywhere in Australia.
